What Is OEKO-TEX?

OEKO-TEX is a globally recognized certification system for textile products at all stages of production. The most well-known standard, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX, tests for harmful substances including heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticides, and other chemicals that could pose health risks. For hospitality buyers, OEKO-TEX certification provides assurance that the products placed in guest rooms meet rigorous safety standards.

The Certification Levels

STANDARD 100 has four product classes based on intended use. Class I covers products for babies and toddlers — the strictest requirements. Class II covers products with direct skin contact, which includes all bedding and towels. Class III covers products without direct skin contact, and Class IV covers decoration materials.

For hotel bedding, Class II certification is the relevant standard. It ensures that sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, and towels have been tested and found free from harmful levels of over 100 regulated substances.
