Two Halloween pillowcases can create one composition: cats facing inward, moons at opposite corners or a scene that continues across the bed. That offer is different from selling two copies of the same print. The buyer must define the left and right units from a fixed viewing position, retain both approved faces and ensure the customer receives the intended pair. A mirrored design should never depend on how a packer interprets a catalogue photograph.
Choose one viewing convention
Left belongs to the complete bed view
Define left and right as seen from the foot of the bed, or select another convention and use it consistently. Show the two finished pillows together with the top edge, opening position and artwork direction identified in the specification. Distinguish an inward-facing pair from two identical prints placed at different angles. The composition should remain understandable when someone other than the designer arranges the bed.
Use the technical pack to preserve that convention. Include a paired reference photograph and individual face drawings. If the customer turns the pillows vertically or places them on separate beds, the composition may change; decide whether those uses are part of the intended offer rather than promising a universal layout.
- Define the viewing position used for left and right.
- Record each opening and top edge independently of the printed motif.
Approve two files and two physical faces
A flip command is not a complete artwork instruction
Give the left and right artwork distinct identifiers. Review any asymmetrical details such as a cat's tail, moon crescent or border element rather than assuming a digital mirror always produces the desired result. Decide whether all details mirror or only the central subject. If words are later added, they require separate attention so that readable copy is not reversed with the illustration.
Maintain the pair through the artwork revision process, but approve physical printed faces as well as files. A correct digital layout does not establish scale or placement on the sewn pillowcase. Keep the two approved faces together in the sample record so that a revised right-hand file cannot be paired accidentally with an obsolete left-hand version.
- Use separate identifiers for left and right artwork.
- Record which graphic elements mirror and which remain unchanged.
Check the composition on filled pillows
Seams and loft change what remains visible
Fit the intended pillow insert and place both units on the bed. Examine the distance between motifs, the visible top margin and the amount of artwork lost around the curved edge. A cat centered on a flat panel may seem too low once the pillow rests behind another cushion. Compare the pair without hiding one unit behind styling props, then record the final arrangement that the customer will see.
The insert-to-cover review can help define the filled reference, while this approval remains focused on the two-part graphic composition. Review each offered size with the intended insert rather than stretching one artwork proportion across every format. If a larger size requires a different gap or motif scale, give it an explicit variant record.
- Approve the gap between motifs in the filled bed view.
- Keep individual size decisions visible in the artwork register.
Make the paired selling unit impossible to misunderstand
Two pieces must mean one of each specified face
Define whether the retail unit contains one left and one right pillowcase, and whether pillow inserts are excluded. Build a trial pack and inspect the two pieces before and after packing. If the visible fold shows only a neutral reverse or small corner, the warehouse may not be able to distinguish the faces without opening the pack. Resolve identification before the bulk packing instruction is issued.
Use the pack-out completeness record for the pair and its size. A carton containing equal totals of left and right pieces is not enough if individual retail packs contain duplicates. Ask how the assembly and checking sequence prevents two left units from becoming one apparently complete set.
- Verify each retail pair, not only carton-level totals.
- State the left/right identity on the internal packing specification.
Plan replacements before the seasonal launch
A single replacement can break the approved pair
Decide whether a damaged unit will be replaced individually or only as a complete pair. If single replacements are supported, identify the side, size, artwork revision and color reference needed to select it. Retain records for the selling season so customer service does not substitute the latest right-hand design into an earlier paired composition. This is especially important when a late artwork revision affects only one side.
The bundle replacement guide can document the service rule. Ask the supplier to quote the approved pair and any replacement stock separately, with actual minimums and timing confirmed. Do not advertise personalization or mix-and-match options until the artwork and inventory system can reliably support those combinations.
- Define whether replacements are single-sided or paired.
- Keep the selling unit linked to both artwork revisions.
Release one paired composition with two identified faces, a fixed bed-view convention and a checked retail pack. FY Bedding can review the left/right development brief and replacement scope before the collection is quoted.
