A size label is not a complete dimensional specification. Buyers need to distinguish the target finished measurement, the acceptable production tolerance and the dimensional change expected after the agreed care process. When these values are mixed together, a product can appear correct before laundering but fail to fit in use—or be oversized at delivery without a controlled reason.

1. Separate target, tolerance and shrinkage

Target finished dimension is the nominal measurement of the product at the agreed conditioning point. Manufacturing tolerance is the permitted variation around that target. Dimensional change is the measured change after a defined care or test cycle. Record all three instead of using one vague “allowance.”

State whether measurements apply before or after laundering, after conditioning, with or without fill, and under tension or laid flat. Use actual length, width, depth and component measurements rather than relying only on market names such as queen or king.

2. Define the measurement method by product

Add simple measurement diagrams to the technical pack. A diagram removes ambiguity about whether a flange, seam or folded edge is included.

3. Set tolerances from function and construction

Tolerance should reflect product function, material behavior, construction complexity and measurement repeatability. A stretch knit protector, quilted panel and stable woven pillowcase do not need identical rules. Coordinated parts may also require a relationship tolerance so the insert, cover and pillowcase work together.

Avoid copying one percentage across every dimension. Small components can become impractical under a percentage-only rule, while a wide panel may permit too much variation. Use the approved sample and capability review to agree realistic, product-specific limits.

4. Validate shrinkage under the intended care route

Define wash temperature, cycle, detergent, drying method, number of cycles and measurement conditioning. Different care routes can produce different results. Test the intended fabric and finish rather than transferring data from an unrelated construction.

Compare the result with fit after care, not only the percentage change. A fitted sheet must still fit the nominated mattress; a duvet cover should remain compatible with the insert; decorative stitching and panels should stay aligned. Connect the test to the product testing plan.

5. Carry the method into bulk control

Production and final inspection should use the same measurement points, conditioning state, sample reference and rounding rule. Record results by SKU and size, and investigate patterns rather than treating every outlier as an isolated event.

If bulk dimensions or shrinkage require a change to the approved standard, use the supplier change-control workflow before release.

Buyer checkpoint

Put target dimension, tolerance, care method and post-care expectation in separate fields. Approve the physical fit with the intended mattress, insert or pillow—not only a number on a table.
