An export carton must protect the agreed unit pack, support handling and stacking, fit the shipment plan and communicate the correct contents. “Standard export carton” is not a measurable requirement. Buyers should define pack-out, dimensions, weight, board direction, closure, protection and marks, then validate the complete packed case.

1. Freeze the unit pack and case pack first

Carton design begins with actual unit-pack dimensions and recovery/compression state. Confirm units per carton, orientation, assortment, inner packs, dividers and acceptable void. A carton calculated before the unit pack is approved may need resizing.

For filled bedding, use verified data from the compression packaging trial. For retail assortments, connect case quantity with the barcode and case-pack matrix.

2. Record a complete carton specification

FieldWhat to define
Internal/external sizeMeasurement order, units and tolerance
Packed weightNet/gross basis and practical limit
Board constructionFlute/ply/performance direction and approved supplier reference
Style/closureCarton design, tape, staples or straps where permitted
ProtectionBag, liner, corner, divider or moisture-control requirement
Marks/labelPO, SKU, quantity, destination and handling data per buyer file
PalletizationPattern, overhang, height and securing method where used

3. Match construction to the distribution route

Review product weight, carton size, stacking period, humidity exposure, manual handling, pallet use, container loading and downstream distribution. Large light cartons and small dense cartons create different compression and handling risks.

Testing or validation should reflect the actual route and buyer protocol. Do not treat a board name alone as proof that the packed case will perform.

4. Control carton marks and label data

Provide one approved artwork/data source with carton dimensions, mark position, print color, variable fields and barcode where used. Reconcile product SKU, unit pack, case quantity and purchase-order line.

Inspect legibility, orientation, data and adhesion on production cartons. A physically strong carton with incorrect contents data can still disrupt receiving and allocation.

5. Approve the complete packed carton

Pack production-representative units using the intended fold, compression and arrangement. Measure external dimensions and gross weight; review bulging, void, closure, product pressure, opening and repacking. Apply agreed handling or transport simulation where required.

Record the approved pack-out with photographs and a retained reference. Add carton condition, count, marks and assortment to the final inspection checklist.

Buyer checkpoint

Approve the carton with the actual unit packs inside. Dimensions, board and marks are connected decisions; changing product compression or case quantity should reopen the carton review.
