Fill weight influences pillow loft, cost and repeatability, but it is not the same as firmness or performance. The same nominal weight can feel different when fiber type, blend, opening, distribution, shell and dimensions change. Buyers need a fill-weight control that supports the approved pillow specification while keeping sensory and recovery approval as separate decisions.
Define target fill weight and product identity
State what is weighed and at which production stage
Specify the fill material or approved blend, pillow size, shell construction, target net fill weight and permitted tolerance. Clarify whether the value is net filling material or gross finished-pillow weight. Without that distinction, shell and accessory variation can be mistaken for fill variation.
Connect the target to the approved product sample and bill of materials. If a different fiber denier, blend or recycled-content route is introduced, the old weight may not reproduce the same loft or feel. Treat material change through the approved change-control process rather than adjusting weight silently at the station.

Control scales and tare at the filling station

Use a scale with suitable capacity and resolution, placed on a stable surface away from vibration or airflow that affects loose fiber readings. If fill is weighed in a basket, bag or shell, define and verify tare. Shell weight can vary by lot and size, so gross pillow weight should not be converted to net fill using an outdated average without assessment. Keep containers clean and avoid accumulating loose fiber that changes tare during the shift.

Sample fill weight across time and stations
Detect drift without relying on one first-off piece
Approve a first-off pillow, then sample at defined intervals across operators, stations, material batches and production time. Record actual net values and watch for trends toward a limit. Averages alone can hide individual underfilled and overfilled pillows, so retain both individual readings and summary information.
Link samples to line, shift and fill-material lot using the product traceability route. If an automatic filler meters material, verify its output with independent scale checks. A machine setting is a process input, not proof of the actual fill in every pillow.

Check distribution, loft and recovery separately
Do not use weight as a shortcut for pillow feel
After filling and closure, distribute the fiber according to the approved process and allow the pillow to recover before visual and sensory review. Compare conditioned loft, firmness direction, shape and corner presentation to the approved sample. If the pillow misses the feel target, investigate material, opening, distribution, shell and dimensions before changing weight. Raising fill weight without analysis can increase cost and create a different problem such as excessive firmness.

Respond to drift and reconcile finished product
Contain affected time windows before release
When a check is outside tolerance, stop or contain production according to the control plan. Identify the last acceptable check and the potentially affected time window, then sample that quantity. Rework should have a defined method and a new verified weight; repeated opening and closing can damage shells or seams.
Before bulk release, compare station records, finished-product inspection and the approved sample through the pilot and bulk-release route. Retain evidence of actual readings, disposition and corrective action. The goal is not perfect numerical uniformity but a controlled population that meets the agreed product and commercial limits.
