Define the opening construction before sampling
Start by naming the closure clearly: open end, internal envelope, external flap or another approved construction. State which side contains the opening, the direction of the envelope and whether the finished product is reversible. A simple line drawing in the technical specification prevents different teams from interpreting the same words differently.
List the finished case size separately from the opening width and envelope depth. The body measurement describes mattress-program compatibility, while the opening measurements control pillow retention. Include tolerances for the main panel, flap, hems and seam turnings so a supplier cannot meet the overall length by silently reducing the functional overlap.
Measure overlap on a relaxed, conditioned case
Condition samples in a consistent environment and lay them flat without pulling. Measure the usable opening between seam or hem reference points, then record the actual fabric-to-fabric overlap with the case empty. For envelope styles, also check overlap after inserting the buyer-approved pillow because fill height and firmness can expose a marginal design.
Use the same orientation and measuring sequence for every sample. Photograph the ruler position and retain the measurement sheet with the approved sample. Run the buyer-approved wash and drying sequence on production-representative cases and pillows. Recheck finished size, opening width and overlap after the specified cycles. Fabric shrinkage can improve one dimension while making the opening harder to use, so the evaluation should include insertion, removal, pillow coverage and visible gaping on the bed.
Hospitality programs should simulate housekeeping speed rather than judging only a carefully dressed sample. Ask users to fit multiple cases and note snagging, excessive effort or pillow exposure. Link the result to the broader linen care plan, because industrial laundering and tumble conditions can affect the construction differently from a gentle domestic cycle.
Control cutting and sewing in bulk production
Set an in-line measurement frequency by size, fabric lot, sewing line and shift. Early checks should focus on cut-panel length, fold guides and hem depth before large quantities accumulate. If results trend toward a tolerance edge, isolate affected bundles and correct the process; do not wait for the final random inspection to reveal a systemic opening problem.
At final inspection, sample across cartons and confirm both measurement and use. Trace failures to roll, bundle, operator and machine where possible. Keep the approved sealed sample and measurement method available to inspectors, and use a documented disposition for rework or acceptance.
