A flat sheet can look simple and still fail at the bed because its finished size, hem hierarchy or intended orientation was never made explicit. Buyers should define the product as a three-dimensional use case rather than a fabric rectangle. Start with the bed, use pattern and presentation
Translate the operating context into sheet geometry
Record the mattress width, length and height, then state whether the sheet must tuck at the foot only, at three sides, or around the full mattress. Presentation also matters. If the wide decorative hem is intended at the head of the bed, name that edge the top and show the direction in the drawing. State whether pillows cover part of it, whether the sheet folds back over a duvet and how much visible hem is expected. These decisions prevent a technically symmetric drawing from being interpreted differently during sewing and room setup.

Define each hem as a construction, not a label
Separate top, side and bottom requirements
For every edge, specify the finished hem depth, fold construction, stitch line position, corner treatment and permitted seam appearance. Do not write only “wide hem” or “standard hem.” A measurable drawing should identify the visible face and reverse, because a folded edge can look acceptable from one side while exposing an unintended seam from the other. If the top and bottom hems differ, include a simple orientation marker in the technical drawing and in the folding instruction. Side hems should be assessed for straightness and rolling after laundering. Measure the product in a defined condition
State whether dimensions apply before wash, after a defined conditioning period or after a specified wash sequence. Give a nominal width and length plus separate tolerances; do not hide them inside a general “industry standard” note. The measurement method should say whether the sheet is laid flat without tension, how wrinkles are relaxed and where the endpoints are taken. Tolerance should follow function. A small variation at a decorative top hem may be visually obvious, while the same numerical variation in overall length may still permit sufficient tuck. Define critical-to-use and critical-to-appearance dimensions separately, then establish what can be reworked and what constitutes a nonconforming unit.

Approve the size sample, fold and pack orientation
Confirm how the approved construction survives handling
A sample approval should cover more than touch and color. Place the sheet on the intended bed, photograph the top-hem position, confirm each tuck and record the measured result. Review the folding pattern so the correct face and top hem are visible when the pack is opened. Keep drawing, sample and inspection sheet aligned
The final inspection sheet should repeat the same edge names, dimensions and measurement state used in the purchase specification. Inspectors need the approved drawing and, where practical, the approved sample. Record actual measurements from the selected units rather than only marking pass or fail. This makes variation visible and supports a useful discussion if the lot approaches a tolerance boundary.
Combine dimensional checks with hem straightness, skipped stitches, corner shape, shade continuity and contamination review.
